stop the reader

This is some quick extra details for a game called stop the reader you can use in church lessons. Credit to seminary teachers for coming up with this!

📖Reading a scripture segment and analyzing it for something comes up in church lessons a LOT.

🔀Mix it up with this activity: choose a reader and objective. When the reader finds something that meets the objective, everyone yells "STOP!" 🛑 and then you discuss it, number it, add it to a list etc.

Example Objective: What is charity? Scripture: Moroni 7:45-48

"And charity suffereth long (STOP!) and is kind (STOP!) and envieth not (STOP!) and is not puffed up (STOP!) seeketh not her own (STOP!) is not easily provoked (STOP!) thinketh no evil (STOP!) and rejoiceth not in iniquity(STOP!) but rejoiceth in the truth (STOP!) beareth all things, (STOP!) believeth all things, (STOP!) hopeth all things,(STOP!) endureth all things. (STOP!)

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. (STOP!)Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all(STOP!), for all things must fail—But charity is the pure love of Christ, (STOP!) and it endureth forever; (STOP!)and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.(STOP!)"

Other Objectives: How many times does ___ use the word ___ in ___? 🤔 How do we apply ____? Who is this scripture talking about, etc? 📖 (It could also just be one question and answer that everyone is waiting to fulfil).

You can mix this up by changing how the reader is stopped. When I did a Christmas lesson I had everyone jingle a jingle bell. People could also clap, snap, or whistle. 👏

I hope you enjoy using this activity in class!
