virtual young women's lessons: 5 teaching tips

👩🏻‍🏫I just taught a virtual YW lesson for my fellow YW + want to help you with yours. Here are simple tips from a YW (me!) 🙋🏻‍♀️ to incorporate in your next lesson!

1. Keep It Short & Sweet 🙏

👩🏻‍💻I spend around 12-33 hours on video calls a week between virtual school, church and extracurriculars, and I think I'm no exception.😌 It is such a blessing that we have technology to meet virtually, but it also makes it very easy for people to get "Zoomed-out." 🥵

Quality over quantity, right? Everyone, no matter the type of call, will appreciate a lesson being straight and to the point. 🙏

2. Slideshow Magic 🪄

I think I’m pretty patient & mature, but on Zoom my attention span goes 📉. A pretty slideshow will keep listeners curious and engaged. In this day & age, it’s easier than ever to pull that off.

💻 There are SO many platforms that have templates & resources to help you make a super slideshow without experience in design. Some examples are PPT, Slides, Keynote & Visme.

🏞 All you need to easily create a killer slideshow is a good template & photos. The Church Media Library has TONS of photos & paintings free for church use.

3.Videos Rock 😎

🎬You will grab + keep attention with videos, so use them as much as you can! Start a lesson with a fun youth video. Instead of reading a Church quote, watch a clip of it. Instead of reading a conference story, use their videos. 📽

You can find Church videos here. General Conference videos can be trimmed to a specific segment on the Gospel Media app or in Google Slides. ✂️ I like to search keywords on churchofjesuschrist.org. 🔎 The Church also filters videos by the YW lesson topics! 😍😍

4. Break out!

Anything to mix up video calls is a good thing, and this is another tool for your arsenal. Breakout rooms allow smaller discussions. 👥

You could assign groups scriptures and have them read & discuss it before sharing findings with the whole class 📖, allow people to share experiences in a more comfortable setting🗣, or collaborate in a lesson activity. 💬

You can make breakout groups randomly, manually, or in a CSV file beforehand. It's hard to know who's going to show up in advance, but it's nice to make good groups of leaders, separated friends, etc. 😼😂

5. Think Outside the Zoom 📦

Make video calls interactive! Utilize resources online like Jamboards, Kahoot (trivia & polls), Peardeck, etc. ✨

You could even share a Google Slide with the class (to edit) to do interactive activities in real time. (Ex: sort parts of a scripture in order, put together puzzle pieces of an image, fill out a table/chart). 🧩

Bringing the lesson to life will be appreciated as well. Send out a notes page people can print & write on📝, utilize scavenger hunts, play stop the reader and have object lessons.

Just like you would in person, which is the point of these simple tips! I hope that they help you as you serve and teach your YW! 💛

updated sunday meeting agendas

Read This Post in: English | Español | Português

💁🏻‍♀️I’m so excited to share these updated 2021 Sunday meeting agendas to help your Young Women’s meetings go more smoothly. I even made a few versions for your different needs!

The Colorful Version 🎨

Floral & feminine, this version is colorful and inviting for those conducting the meeting. Print this once & use it again and again. 🤩

Less Colorful Version 🏵

This edition still has the colors for aesthetic, but it’s on a clean white background to minimize ink. If you’re a minimalist, you may prefer this edition! 😌

Black + White Version 🔲

If you’re going to make multiple copies of this at the church, this is for you. It's printer friendly! 📠

How To Use The Conducting Agenda

There are several ways I just listed to use these agendas as you conduct—use one, make copies, print more—but THE most low maintenance method is what you’re going to find below! 😎

The Whiteboard Method

I learned from Destination Decoration 🤩 that glass frames can be used as whiteboards and have seriously never looked back!! It's an inexpensive, effective and time saving tip.

Insert your favorite agenda into an 8x10 frame, and buy/bring a dry erase marker with an eraser cap like this one. Then weekly use + write questions.

young women lesson reminders

👩🏻‍🎨 I’ve created digital & printable resources you can use to remind your young women of upcoming Sunday lessons. 💬 Enjoy one or both!

the printables

Going back to the primary days here! 😎 I’ve made several versions of these so they can be adapted to your lesson planning methods. Specific approach or information you want to emphasize? There’s a card for that. ✨

the textables

There are so many ways these can be used! 🤳 I’ve included some mockups below, but they are all vague enough to be adapted to whatever fits your lesson planning needs.

the verdict

As a young woman, which method would I prefer to be reminded with? I’d vote for text! I’m way more likely to have my phone on me and open a leader’s text than keep track of a lesson reminder slip. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The textables also invite a conversation instead of an assignment—where questions can be asked, reassurances can be made, and multiple reminders can be issued if needed. 😉

come, follow me for yw lesson checklist

🤩I live for checklists (& the thrill of completing them, ofc).

If you’re teaching a Sunday lesson (in Young Women’s or any group or organization) this “night before” checklist is the perfect addition for you to organize your prep. 📋

In just 9 questions 😱, you can feel prepared! The checklist will help you avoid copy room guesswork, miscommunication, or a situation like this...🤣🤣🤣unless that’s what you’re going for!

stop the reader

This is some quick extra details for a game called stop the reader you can use in church lessons. Credit to seminary teachers for coming up with this!

📖Reading a scripture segment and analyzing it for something comes up in church lessons a LOT.

🔀Mix it up with this activity: choose a reader and objective. When the reader finds something that meets the objective, everyone yells "STOP!" 🛑 and then you discuss it, number it, add it to a list etc.

Example Objective: What is charity? Scripture: Moroni 7:45-48

"And charity suffereth long (STOP!) and is kind (STOP!) and envieth not (STOP!) and is not puffed up (STOP!) seeketh not her own (STOP!) is not easily provoked (STOP!) thinketh no evil (STOP!) and rejoiceth not in iniquity(STOP!) but rejoiceth in the truth (STOP!) beareth all things, (STOP!) believeth all things, (STOP!) hopeth all things,(STOP!) endureth all things. (STOP!)

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. (STOP!)Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all(STOP!), for all things must fail—But charity is the pure love of Christ, (STOP!) and it endureth forever; (STOP!)and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.(STOP!)"

Other Objectives: How many times does ___ use the word ___ in ___? 🤔 How do we apply ____? Who is this scripture talking about, etc? 📖 (It could also just be one question and answer that everyone is waiting to fulfil).

You can mix this up by changing how the reader is stopped. When I did a Christmas lesson I had everyone jingle a jingle bell. People could also clap, snap, or whistle. 👏

I hope you enjoy using this activity in class!
